In Pico, the relationship between man and his natural environment is not limited to the grapevines. Toiling the field for domestic and cereal crops was equally important for the populations' survival. The maroiços are part of the local ethnography, their construction being justified with the cleaning of the soils for agriculture. These structures are similar to others in the Mediterranean (Sicily) and the Canary Islands (Tenerife), leading to studies that assign them other meanings and perceptions. Whatever their actual origin, what matters is that maroiços are a part of the history and heritage of Madalena.
