Sítio classificado pela UNESCO desde 2004. Trata-se de uma unidade paisagística construída, marcada por uma extensa malha de muros de pedra que formam currais de vinha – ligados à produção do vinho verdelho –, onde as vinhas são cultivadas em chão negro, com abrigos e adegas dispersos pelo terreno. Os muros protegem os milhares de lotes contíguos (currais ou curraletas) dos ventos e do rocio do mar, deixando entrar o sol necessário à maturação das uvas. Os registos da vinicultura na ilha, que se iniciou no século XV, manifestam-se nesta belíssima paisagem construída pelo homem.

It is a built landscape, market by an extensive mesh of stone walls making up vine corrals - linked to producing verdelho wine - where the vines are cultivated in the black ground, with shelters and cellars spread across the terrain. The walls protect the thousands of adjacent plots (corrals or "curraletas") from the winds and the sea spray while letting in the sun needed to mature the grapes. Starting in the 15th century, the records of viniculture on the island are manifested in this stunning man-made landscape.
