A vida que prosperou no negro do basalto, mantém a sua essência e identidade preservadas nos lugares e no legado vernacular que atravessou gerações. Ao visitante, oferece-se um cenário imperturbado para apreciar e admirar. A natureza, a paisagem, o contacto com as comunidades locais nas suas vivências e manifestações culturais, o aroma do vinho, o calor das vinhas, o ritual dos alambiques, são a sugestão de um roteiro que se complementa na visitação e fruição de dezenas de lugares.
A rota (Percurso Principal) inclui toda a faixa costeira do concelho da Madalena, entre as localidades do Cachorro, no limite noroeste do concelho, e São Mateus na zona sudoeste. Poderá ser feito de carro ou de bicicleta, numa distância total aproximada de 25 km.
A Ciclovia da Madalena é contígua à parte norte deste percurso em 13,2 km, entre a Areia Larga e o Cachorro; é possível percorrer de bicicleta, com um nível de dificuldade fácil, toda a linha junto ao mar, com as ilhas do Faial e São Jorge no horizonte, descobrindo os diversos ativos turísticos assinalados. Na metade norte do percurso, nos Toledos, o Museu do Vinho (ponto 23), instalado no antigo Convento do Carmo (mansão de veraneio dos frades carmelitas da Horta, com instalações agrícolas da fase opulenta do Ciclo do Vinho Verdelho na ilha do Pico), reúne memórias e tecnologias associadas ao vinho. Enquadra-se numa extensão de vinha que domina a paisagem e a propriedade tem ainda um belíssimo conjunto de dragoeiros seculares que evidenciam o encanto da paisagem natural.
The life that prospered in the dark basalt maintains its essence and identity-preserved in the places and the vernacular legacy that spans generations. Visitors get undisturbed scenery to appreciate and admire. Nature, the landscape, the contact with the local communities and their experiences, cultural expressions, the wine's aroma, the vineyards' heat, the stills' ritual, and the suggestion of an itinerary complemented by visiting and appreciating dozens of places.
The route (Main Route) includes the entires coastal strip in the township of Madalena, between Cachorro on the northwest of the township, and São Mateus in the southwest. It can be done by car or bicycle, with a total distance of approximately 25 km/15.5 mi.
The Madalena Bike Track is adjacent to the north part of this 13.2 km/8.2 mi. route between Areia Larga and Cachorro; it is easy to do it on a bicycle the whole path by the sea, with the islands of Faial and São Jorge on the horizon, discovering the many marked tourism spots. On the northern half of the rout, in Toledos, the Wine Museum (point 23) collects memories and technologies associated with wine; the museum is in the old Carmo Convent, the summer manor of the Carmelite friars from Horta, with farming facilities from the opulent phase of the Cycle of Verdelho Wine of Pico Island. It is part of a stretch of vineyard that dominates the landscape, and the property also has a beautiful set of centuries-old dragon trees that bring out the charm of the natural landscape.
