Corrida dos Reis

January
It's a road race that has been taking place for more than a quarter of a century already, to encourage the practice of sports and to bring more people to this activity. It always counts with the presence of some of the best portuguese and, even sometimes, international athletes. There's also a special competition for athletes with disabilities. It takes place in São Mateus.

Feast of Santo Amaro

People prey to this saint to seek help against illness and protection for their animals. The festival in his honour takes place at the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in Valverde.

Feast of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres

Every year, since 1718, people visit the Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres on February 2. On that date there was a volcanic eruption and the lava reached the sea. This chapel, however, was not damaged by the lava flows and the locals vowed to always visit the chapel on that day from then on, as a sign of gratitude.

Santo António (Saint Anthony of Padua) is known in Portugal for being the saint that will help those who want to find a partner and/or to get married. Tradition says that on this day people should eat grilled sardines and caldo verde (portuguese green soup). These celebrations take place in Canto, São Mateus.

It's the biggest festival in Monte, Candelária, and it's celebrated every year in August in honour of its patron saint. Daily Masses are held for seven consecutive days before the day of the feast.

Feast of Nossa Senhora do Desterro

Title given to the Virgin Mary by the catholic church that represents the flight of the Holy Family to Egypt. She's the patron saint of those who are forced to leave their countries, to seek refuge or to find a job. It's celebrated in Cais do Mourato, Bandeiras.

It's tradition to roast chestnuts and to drink the new wine, made from the previous summer harvest. It's usual that the weather gets better around this time, as it happened with Saint Martin, according to the legend. This occurrence is known as Saint Martin's Summer. It's celebrated in Criação Velha and in São Mateus.

Feast of Santa Cecília

Santa Cecília is the patron saint of musicians. It's said that she sang to God while she was dying and even after receiving three strikes to the neck, her chants kept being heard. The festival in her honour is celebrated in the parish of Santa Maria Madalena, always counting with choirs, folk dance groups and bands from all over the municipality.

On this day, the patron saint of Portugal is honoured. This feast celebrates the belief in the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It's celebrated in the parishes of São Mateus and Madalena.
