[THINGS TO DO AND SEE IN PICO/ NATURE]

Pico Mountain and Planalto da Achada

(Central Plateau)

Pico Mountain, standing at 2 351 m above sea level, is the highest mountain in Portugal. Located on the geologically most recent part of the island, it is also the highest elevation of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (although there are higher elevations on atlantic islands, these are not located on the ridge).

Access to the mountain is limited and all climbing activity must be registered and monitored by the Mountain House (Casa da Montanha), at 1100m. Besides the information desk, there is also a panoramic bar.

The climb is a wonderful experience and is considered of medium/high degree of difficulty. It is recommended for all those who are capable of such physical activities and that seek mountain adventures: peace, serenity and silence.

Pico Mountain is classified as Natural Reserve and is one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal..

Pico island is one of the best eco-tourism destinations of the Azores, offering unique experiences and promoting sustainable tourism.

On the eastern side of the island sits the Central Plateau (Planalto da Achada), a volcanic ridge with 30km of extension between Capitão Lake (Lagoa do Capitão) and Ponta da Ilha. It has around 200 volcanic cones, with peat moss, puddles and lakes: Rosada, Paúl, Landroal, Caiado, Peixinho and Negra.

This is considered one of the most important sites in the Azores for endemic species: Cedro do Mato ( Juniperus brevifolia ), Queiró ( Calluna vulgaris ), Sanguinho ( Frangula azorica ) and Trovisco Macho ( Euphorbia stygiana ).
